CLINICAL STUDIES ON COLLAGEN FOR SKIN HEALTH
CONCLUSION: Collagen Hydrolysate consumption improve water-absorbing capacity of the outermost layer of the skin
Twenty healthy Japanese women consumed a drink containing 10g of collagen hydrolysate or placebo every day for 2 months. At 1 month, the collagen-ingested group showed a much greater increase than placebo group in water absorbing capacity of the outermost layer of the skin. The difference became larger when the test period was extended to 2 months [4].
CONCLUSION: Dietary consumption of collagen hydrolysate has a significant improvement in age-related degenerative skin changes
A study published in The Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association, a total of 40 women aged 35-65 years were enrolled in a blinded, randomized, parallel design of eight-week, four-visit study to assess the safety and efficacy of dietary collagen hydrolysate formulation for the improvement of age-related degenerative skin changes. It was reported that the consumption of the dietary collagen hydrolysate formulation resulted in a highly statistically significant improvement in periorbital (eyelid) wrinkling (crow’s feet) and periorbital aging, as well as overall facial aging with minimal adverse effects [5].
CONCLUSION: Significant improvement in skin elasticity for collagen hydrolysate group
A clinical study proving the effect of collagen hydrolysate on skin elasticity has been published [6]. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 69 women aged 35-55 years were randomized to receive 2.5 g or 5.0 g of collagen hydrolysate product or placebo once daily for 8 weeks, with 23 subjects being allocated to each treatment group. Skin biophysical parameters related to cutaneous aging such as skin elasticity (primary interest), skin moisture, trans-epidermal water loss and skin roughness (secondary interest) were objectively measured immediately before starting the product treatment, after 4 and 8 weeks of daily intake.
At the end of the study, skin elasticity in both collagen hydrolysate dosage groups showed a statistically significant improvement as compared to placebo. At 4 weeks after the last product intake, the treatment subgroup of elderly women still showed statistically higher skin elasticity levels than the placebo group, with about 98% of the positive effect on this parameter after having stopped collagen hydrolysate intake [6].
The results clearly demonstrated that the oral consumption of collagen hydrolysate led to a statistically significant improvement in skin elasticity. No visible changes detected on the skin roughness. Researchers concluded that the positive impact of oral intake of collagen hydrolysate on skin health seems to be long-lasting, especially in elderly women aged over 50 years, in contrast to most topically applied collagen product [6]
The above clinical studies verify that regular intake of collagen improves the basic skin condition and structure. Studies have shown that taking collagen peptides showed a significant improvement in skin elasticity and skin moisture. [7]
